Maybe some of you have heard of PuTTY and love it like I do, and maybe some more of you have used PuTTY connection manager and love it more.

This post will be dedicated to showcasing the skills of the connection manager, a freeware tabbed version of PuTTY with numerous of hidden options that make this program a must. You can thank me later, finding the download for this freeware is ridiculously hard to locate, for some reason over half the links on the web end up at a dead link.

Before we kick off the section on the all the incredible options Connection Manager has, lets learn to use it. To begin a simple one time connection to a device you have the ever so simple menu bar on the upper portion of your screen with all your options. Use the drop down to select your protocol Either SSH, Telnet, Raw, or RLogin , type your IP Address in the Host slot, and the login and password fields are completely optional.

Now lets begin the cool stuff:. Here is one of the most important options in connection manager, you may also check Enable Login Macro Mode here to have PuTTY connection manager automatically type in your username and password for you This is also why it is a great idea to secure your database.

After you check the box select the Login Macro on the left task bar, here you can specify your username and password for login. This also leads to another useful option, if you check the Enable post-login commands you can input up to five commands that you wish to be loaded instantly after the login is complete. You may also select the Macro options on the left task bar if your commands are being sent a little too fast or slow for your device to receive them in correct order.

Here you can specify many many options on how the information is to be displayed to you just as you did in the orginal PuTTY. If you click the Configuration button it will load the underlying PuTTY session for further configurations.

Here are a few of my favorite add-ons:. Also repeat this step for Default Bold Foreground. Also make sure to check the box for Enable TCP keepalives is checked.

After you have pick and chosen which option best fits your setup you need to save these settings.

Finally click close, to exit the configuration window, and then OK to complete making your connection. Now we have the basic connection made, with some great additions, lets show you how use multiple sessions effectively. This is perhaps one of the most useful and advertised additions to PuTTY connection manager. You will notice that if you open more than one session it will by default add another tab to your current window, which is useful, but we need to see them all at once.

Click and drag one of the sessions towards the middle of the screen and you will see an icon appear showing you where you lock this tab to. If you select one of the four outside options it will split your screen between your sessions accordingly, and BAM your multi-tasking…congratulations.

Now that you have two or more windows actively displayed at once all you need to do is a few simple steps and you can send one set of commands to all them at once.

Begin with right clicking on the title of your session and select Listen for MCS commands. Repeat this for the next session window you wish to send commands to. Finally, you will notice that the Command window is available to type in, at the top of your screen.

Now go ahead and type something in it, you can instantly notice it is sent to both sessions. This option is extremely simple, but yet important, as I love to get the most workable space on my monitors, this is how to turn on auto-hide for your connections manager window.

You will notice on the right there is a constant bar titled connection manager, if you click the little tack icon it will unpin the menu and it will hide if not in use. Now when you mouse over the menu it will appear otherwise it will stay out of your way. Although this option may seem simple and maybe even not needed I HIGHLY recommend you look again.

Have you ever minimized connection manager and it hides itself in the system tray. Does this annoy you as much as it annoys me? If not ignore this option, if so please continue.

DO NOT uncheck the Show tray icon box. This seems to result in not allowing you to boot your connection manager again without getting an error message. While we are in the options there are a few in here that I may also recommend for you to, at least, look at and see if you like.

Finally after I have completely convinced you that PuTTY connection manager has no flaws and is completely superior to its predecessor PuTTY, I do have one draw back.

The original can access serial connections, where as connection manager has no such options. So you can see connection manager is for the admin that is fully setup and finished that initial setup with the annoying console cable.
